School Profile

Frank E. Woodruff Elementary School has served the northern portion of our school district for more than a half a century. Students receive high-quality instruction and social-emotional support from our caring and dedicated staff, and technology integration across the curriculum continues to be our priority.

Frank E. Woodruff Elementary School continues its long commitment to provide quality educational programs, effective resources and excellent facilities for all students. Tier 1 instruction is this year’s academic priority. Teachers are working, alongside the Instructional Specialist, with content standards and student data in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to backwards plan and provide Tier 1 instruction, and intervention and enrichment to our students. Students receive standards-based instruction in both math and language arts. We have interactive, large screens in all classrooms and use Chromebooks in our daily instruction. At this time, students in grades TK-6 have individual devices at school and are offered the opportunity to have an additional device at home. Teachers and students effectively use technology to enhance curriculum, pedagogy and engagement. Our full-day, Transitional Kindergarten and half-day Preschool programs support transition into Kindergarten.

We are partnering with Education through Music Los Angeles (ETM-LA), for the second year, to provide music as a core subject for our K-4 learners and utilize music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence. We have also begun to implement and incorporate Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) within our curriculum and classroom structure. AVID provides scaffolded support that educators and students need to encourage college and career readiness and success.

A variety of intervention and enrichment programs are available before, during, and after school. Our Think Together after school program provides enrichment and intervention opportunities for approximately 20% of our students. Also, teachers offer before and after intervention opportunities for our students. GATE students receive differentiated instruction with added depth, novelty, complexity, and acceleration. English Language Development is provided each day for English learners. Last but not least, our intervention teachers are coordinating Tier 2 intervention or enrichment for all our students during the school day so that each student is able to get “What I Need”.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework used to improve school culture and student behavior, promoting a safe environment for learning. A key aspect of PBIS is to focus on the positive behaviors and less on the negative behaviors.

The Woodruff PTA is an integral part of our school culture and community. Parent and teacher collaboration is vital for the social-emotional well-being of our students and staff. They work together to create experiences for our students to support with the sense of belonging and connectedness.
